You write your take-home pay at the top and give every dollar a job until nothing is left unassigned. No app, no formulas, just a pen and last month’s statements.
What is on the page
- Month and take-home pay at the top, so each sheet is one month.
- Needs: rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, transportation, insurance, phone and debt minimums.
- Save and pay down: emergency fund, extra toward debt and sinking funds for things you know are coming.
- Fun: fun money, eating out and subscriptions.
- Budget and Actual columns for every line, and a “Left over” line that should read $0 when the plan is done.
How to use it
- Write your take-home pay, the money that actually lands in your account, not your salary.
- Fill in needs first, using real numbers from last month’s statements.
- Decide what goes to saving and paying down debt before you plan any fun money. Even $25 counts.
- Split what is left across the fun lines until “Left over” reads $0.
- At the end of the month, fill in the Actual column and adjust next month’s plan.
Your first budget will be wrong, and that is fine
Almost nobody gets a budget right the first month. Groceries run over, a bill you forgot shows up, a birthday happens. The worksheet is not a test you pass or fail; it is a record that gets more accurate every time you fill it in. By month three most people have numbers they trust. Print a few copies and keep last month’s sheet next to this month’s so you can compare.
If you are not sure what counts as a need, the needs vs wants guide gives you a simple test for each line.
